I have a male schnauzer and he gets a lot of ear infection.?

My dog gets a lot of wax build up in his ears and every nite I use a Qtip to remove the wax. He is scratching his ears so much, that he made his ear lobe bleed a little. I have been putting antiobodient ointment on his ears, but that doesn't seem to help. I was trying to heal it myself, but I might need to take him to the vet. Schnauzer are probe to have a lot of ear infections. Does anyone know what I could do for him.
